The task force represented issues which happened to be the promotion of justice, democracy and human rights in Eritrea and in support of Eritrean refugees. They opened a gate through which all political, civic organization and individuals pass through and engage the EU and USA.

Starvation in Eritrea continues to push its citizens into Ethiopia. The last 2 months have seen a steady increase in those coming, both as families and as individuals. In towns, people are restricted in what they can purchase: in a day: one piece of bread per person. In the rural districts there is no grain. Aside from the lack of food in Eritrea, they report that those fishing on the Red Sea are now prevented from doing so.

بروكسل: دعا المؤتمر الدولي لتعزيز الديمقراطية وحقوق الإنسان في القرن الإفريقي المنعقد في العاصمة البلجيكية بروكسل ، دعا الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية والإتحاد الأوربي إلى تقوية دور اللاعبين السياسيين من المجتمع المدني لاسيما الأحزاب السياسية بإعتبار ذالك مقاربة لوضع حد للأزمة الإنسانية في الإقليم والإهتمام برعاية الإنتقال نحو الديمقراطية.

من توصيات مؤتمر بروكسل:

• الدعوة لدعم وتشجيع مبادرات حرية التعبير عبر الوسائل الإعلامية كالبث الإذاعي والتلفزيوني وغير ذالك من وسائل الإتصال.

• التأسيس لعملية العدالة الإنتقالية في إرتريا عبر دراسة وتفويض لجنة (محكمة) للإعداد لعملية العدالة الإنتقالية والمصالحة وتضميد الجراح .

...did the sky fall because some caring Eritreans sat with EU and American officials to bring our cause to the open that is usually kept in the back burner, while the EDA was asleep on the wheel? The answer is no unless the sky on their side is falling on their heads. You see, they are unable to see the way ahead; everything looks to them negative. As Haile Gebru put it, this emanates from their inability to break away from the old political culture centered in combativeness, divisiveness, uncompromising and trashing whatever others’ views may be.

BRUSSELS – An international conference, held November 9 – 10, 2009 in Brussels, Belgium on the promotion of democracy and human rights in the Horn of Africa called on the European Union and the USA to strengthen civil society actors, including political parties, as a way to end the regional humanitarian crisis and to foster a transition towards democracy.
